Pest Control in Kansas City
I recently tried (and fell in love with) Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill in Kansas City. The first time I went there for an event I got to meet the owner, Rick Blackham. At that time I learned that he also owned a pest control company in the Kansas City area called Mantis Pest Solutions.
Costa Vida was a well-oiled machine and all of the employees I encountered there were extremely kind and hardworking. I had no doubt that the same was true for Mantis.
why i want to protect my home
As many of you know by now, Ethan and I are in the process of building a home. In the meantime, we are living with my kind and generous parents. Not to mention, all four of our dogs. We live close to a wooded area, and because the dogs constantly want to go outside, we often leave the back door propped for them. Unfortunately, this leads to unwanted pests getting in the house. Wasps, mosquitoes, moths – you name it.
My parents have had pest control companies treating their house for as long as I can remember. It recently crossed my mind that this is something Ethan and I will want to consider once our new house is move-in ready.
When Rick asked me if we would give his company a chance, I had to say yes. I love supporting small, local and family-owned companies. It is always nice to go with someone you know and trust.
One of the reasons we decided to take the plunge and build a home was so we could build it exactly the way we want it. I don’t know about you, but my dream home doesn’t include pests. Not just because they’re an annoyance, but because they can be a hazard to my family. I know that pest control is important for health as well as general peace of mind.
Disclosure: Mantis Pest Solutions is providing me with free pest control services in exchange for social promotion. I will also earn a small commission if you use Mantis through my referral page. Please note that I only support and promote companies that I truly believe in. Thank you for trusting me and supporting Wellness For The Win.
WHY DO WE NEED PEST CONTROL?
Pests can be a lot more than just pests, depending on what they are (and also, where in the world they inhabit). They can be dangerous, contagious, even lethal.
Mosquitoes
The main pest I’m referring to is mosquitoes. They are so small you can barely see them until it’s too late. The risk of being bitten by a mosquito is often underestimated by people in the U.S.
Since mosquitoes drink the blood of those they bite, they are liable to become carriers of diseases that the person, or animal, they bite are infected with. Mosquitoes transfer these diseases from person to person, or from animal to person through their saliva, which they inject into their chosen subject.
Viruses carried by mosquitoes:
- Malaria hasn’t been a worry for many years, but many harmful viruses are still prevalent and circulating in the U.S., such as: the Zika virus, dengue fever, Chikungunya virus, and more.
- The Zika virus has received more media attention in the last few years, since it has become more pervasive in the U.S. during that time. This virus is particularly harmful to pregnant women, as it can harm the fetus, and result in birth defects in their child.
- Dengue fever directly harms the people it bites, resulting in fever-like symptoms, and, if not treated early enough, it can lead to organ damage, severe bleeding, and death.
At the very least, viruses and diseases carried by mosquitoes can cause incredible discomfort, sickness, and debilitation. At worst, the diseases they carry can be deadly.
Mosquitoes aren’t just a hazard to people. They can also transfer otherwise non-contagious diseases and viruses to birds and other wildlife, as well as our domesticated, four-legged friends. I think you all know how much I love my dogs by now…
Beyond nasty diseases and viruses, we love to sit on the patio in the summertime and enjoy dinner or drinks at night. This will be much more pleasant if we don’t have to worry about pesky mosquitoes!
Wasps
As I mentioned earlier, we have been leaving the door cracked for the dogs to go in and out lately, and we have had a ridiculous amount of wasps getting in the house. (Note: this was prior to our first treatment with Mantis).
I think it’s obvious why having wasps in the house is a concern. Of course, none of us want to get stung, and I don’t want my dogs (or my one year old niece) to be at risk either. My brother is allergic to wasp stings, so he definitely needs to avoid being stung. Wasps are one of the worst pests to deal with during the warmer months, in my personal opinion. This is something that Mantis can also address with their services.
Other Pests and Bed Bugs
I can only hope that our brand new house will be free of any and all pests, but I know that is wishful thinking. There is always a risk that ants, spiders and even rodents could get in your house, in addition to the pests previously mentioned. Some are just annoying, while others pose real health threats.
Bed bugs are another example of pests that infest people’s homes all over the world. Despite the stigma of having a bed bug infestation, it’s actually a pretty common problem. While their bites are not usually conducive to serious illnesses (though they are carriers of some human pathogens), they leave itchy red bumps on your skin and can leave a pretty nasty rash.
Contrary to popular belief, having a bed bug infestation isn’t necessarily a sign of bad hygiene or a lack of cleanliness. Any home can become a victim to their infestation. In addition, bed bugs can live on lots of different types of furniture – not just beds.
Pest Control in Kansas City: mantis pest solutions
Thankfully, Mantis Pest Solutions agreed to help me eradicate the pests in and around my home. Mantis offers extermination services for more than just bed bugs and mosquitoes. They can adapt to pretty much all of your pest control needs.
When Rick came over to explain their services to my family, I felt confident that they would do a great job. When one of the Mantis technicians came over for the first quarterly service, he was extremely thorough. He spent nearly an hour completing the service, making sure he didn’t miss a thing. He even played fetch with my puppy for a bit, which equals bonus points in my book. ; )
How Often Should Pest Control Be Done?
Mantis Pest Solutions offers quarterly pest control treatments; however, they will come out to your house between services anytime you need them, free of charge!
Could I Do Pest Control Myself?
Anyone could attempt to do pest control themselves, but it would require quite a bit of research, money spent on products, figuring out how to safely store the chemicals, etc. Hiring experts to do pest control for you may seem more expensive up front, but it is extremely convenient and also gives you peace of mind knowing it is done properly.
